Breast Implant Revision Surgery 101

Breast Revision Surgery Scottsdale

Breast augmentation remains one of the most commonly requested plastic surgeries among women. But sometimes, the results don’t last. If you’re experiencing complications with your breast implants or are otherwise unhappy with their appearance, it’s time to talk to board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Geoghegan.

Reasons for Breast Revision
If you have saline breast implants inserted, there’s a possibility that they will leak or deflate. This is one possible reason for breast revision surgery. Silicone breast implants may also rupture although they won’t deflate like saline implants. An imaging test will likely be necessary to detect the leak. Some women decide that they aren’t quite satisfied with the size of the implants they initially selected. If you would like to increase or decrease your cup size, revision surgery can accomplish this. Some women undergo breast revision surgery because of complications that developed after the initial implant placement. Occasionally, implants may shift out of position or scar tissue may develop around them. Women who have lost or gained a substantial amount of weight experience breast tissue changes, which might also call for revision surgery.

Candidates for Breast Revision
Dr. Geoghegan will perform a comprehensive physical exam and medical history review to make sure you’re a good candidate for breast revision surgery. Be sure to inform the doctor if you have any allergies, if you had a previous reaction to anesthesia, or if you have heart disease or diabetes. Your surgeon should also know if you’re a smoker. Tell him or her if you are planning a pregnancy or are breastfeeding.

Techniques for Breast Revision
Revision surgery can be more complex than the original procedure. Dr. Geoghegan will discuss the appropriate options based on the reasons you are undergoing the revision procedure. For instance, if you decided to change your implant size, she can usually use the original incision. The implants are removed and the area is either enlarged or reduced to accommodate the new implants.
